Studying
I'm in the final stretch of Public Service Commission preparation. The syllabus is mostly tamed; the work now is revision, past papers, and the slow business of turning familiarity into fluency. One subject a day, deeply, with spaced repetition in Anki every morning.
I'm paying special attention to public finance and monetary economics this season — partly because they're high-yield on the exam, partly because they're the parts I most enjoy.
Reading
- Interest and Prices by Michael Woodford — slowly, a few pages a night. It's dense and worth the density.
- Thinking, Fast and Slow (a reread) — I came back to it after the replication-crisis dust settled; I wrote about it here.
- The Idea of Justice by Amartya Sen — for the polity and ethics paper, but honestly also for myself.
Writing
I'm trying to publish one essay a week here. The discipline of explaining something to strangers is the best study method I've found — if I can't write it clearly, I don't understand it.
Current drafts in progress: a piece on the political economy of Nepal's remittance dependence, and a longer reflection on what "merit" means in competitive exams.
Building
A small tool to turn my reading notes into Anki cards is in steady use; I'm resisting the urge to expand it. The blog itself is a constant low-grade project — I tinker with typography more than I should.
Not doing
- Social media, mostly. I check Twitter rarely and post even less.
- New side projects. The two I have are enough.
- Reading the news first thing in the morning. I've moved it to after lunch and my mornings are calmer for it.
